Purpose: To provide healthcare professionals with the necessary training and education to implement MAT therapy into their practice.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss ways to set up an office practice to prescribe buprenorphine
  • Describe logistics regarding home, hospital and office based MAT induction treatment
  • Discuss appropriate monitoring parameters in MAT therapy including the thorough evaluation of urine drug screening
  • Describe the care of pregnant patients with opioid use disorder and appropriate management of neonatal abstinence syndrome

Target Audience: Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Pharmacists

Nicole Gastala, MD is a Clinical Physician and Researcher in the Department of Family Medicine at UI Health/Miles Square in Chicago, Illinois.  Prior to that, Dr. Gastala practiced in a community health center, Primary Health Care in Marshalltown, Iowa.  Dr. Gastala has been an approved buprenorphine prescriber since 2016.  She has experience in managing addiction in both urban and rural addiction practices.   Dr. Gastala is an approved MAT Waiver trainer.

Alexis Braverman MD

Alexis Braverman MD

Alexis Braverman is a general obstetrician/gynecologist with an interest in Opioid Use Disorder in pregnancy. Dr. Braverman graduated from Sidney Kimmel Medical College and then completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 2018 and has had her DEA-X waiver since that time. She is happy to have the tools to provide both the prenatal care and treatment of her patient’s opioid dependence in one place.

Kathy Wollner, MD

Kathy Wollner MD

Kathy Wollner, MD is an Associate Professor of Clinical Family Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine at UI Health in Chicago, IL. She practices at Pilsen Family Health Lower West and the Family Medicine Center at University Village. Previously, she practiced full spectrum family medicine in Juneau, AK, where she developed a primary care based program for buprenorphine prescribing and aided in the development of inpatient protocols for buprenorphine induction. Dr. Wollner has been an approved buprenorphine prescriber since 2015. She has a specific interest in caring for women with opioid use disorder during pregnancy and through the postpartum period.

Jennie Jarrett PharmD

Jennie Jarrett PharmD

Jennie Jarrett is a clinical pharmacist and researcher with an interest in Opioid Use Disorder and clinician education. Dr. Jarrett received her BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also went on to earn her PharmD. After her PGY1 residency at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI and PGY2 residency in Ambulatory care at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC, she worked as the Director of Inpatient Pharmacotherapy Education and Director of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at UPMC St. Margaret as a part of their Family Medicine Residency Program. During her work at UPMC, she additionally completed a Masters in Medical Education at the University of Pittsburgh. Jennie joined the Department of Pharmacy Practice as an Assistant Professor in November 2016 with research interests focused on pharmacotherapy education and practice for clinical excellence.
